The Link Between Vaginal Health & Estrogen
Hormones, the chemical messengers in the body, have a profound impact on our reproductive system and overall health. They regulate a ton of bodily functions, such as growth, metabolism, reproduction, and even mood. In the context of vaginal health, estrogen plays a key role.
How Does Estrogen Impact Our Vaginal Health?
Estrogen helps to maintain the health and function of the vaginal tissues. It contributes to the thickness and elasticity of the vaginal walls, promotes the production of natural lubrication, and helps maintain a balanced pH level. It also promotes the growth of healthy vaginal bacteria, Lactobacillus, which is a crucial part of preventing infections like STIs, bacterial vaginosis, and Candida.
The Fluctuations of Estrogen
Hormonal fluctuations occur naturally and cyclically throughout our life. Puberty, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, and menopause all involve shifts in hormone levels, each affecting vaginal health differently.
During puberty
As estrogen levels rise, the vaginal walls thicken, and the vaginal environment transforms in preparation for reproductive functions. The menstrual cycle further influences vaginal health, with changes in vaginal discharge consistency and volume occurring under hormonal influence depending on the stage of the cycle.
Pregnancy
Brings about significant hormonal changes, including a surge in estrogen and progesterone levels. These hormonal shifts lead to increased blood flow to the vaginal area, causing changes in color, secretions, and vaginal sensitivity. After childbirth, estrogen levels drop rapidly, which may result in vaginal dryness and discomfort.
Perimenopause
The transitional phase leading up to menopause, is marked by hormonal fluctuations and irregular menstrual cycles. Estrogen levels gradually decline, impacting vaginal health. Menopause, the cessation of menstruation, further intensifies the effects of estrogen deficiency. This is when we see things like vaginal dryness, thinning of tissues, and an increased risk of infections.
A Final Word
Just like any other area of health, vaginal health can be influenced by a whole host of factors including our hormones, which is why a whole body approach is essential. Too often, it is an area of health that is overlooked or dismissed, despite the significant impacts it can have on our quality of life.
