What is Endometriosis? A Naturopathic Doctor Explains

If you’ve ever been told your period pain is “normal,” but deep down you know something isn’t right, you might have wondered about endometriosis. It’s one of the most common gynecological conditions, yet also one of the most misunderstood.

As a naturopathic doctor, I see many patients who have spent years being dismissed, misdiagnosed, or left with more questions than answers. My goal here is to explain what endometriosis actually is, what signs to look for, and how holistic, integrative care can make a real difference.

What Exactly Is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus.

Because this tissue is hormone-sensitive, it reacts to the monthly cycle. Leading to symptoms that can be chronic and debilitating.

Symptoms vary widely, which is one reason diagnosis is delayed. Some people experience debilitating pain, while others may have minimal symptoms but still struggle with infertility.

The most common signs include:

  • Severe period pain that may not get better with pain meds

  • Chronic pelvic pain happening even outside of your periods

  • Pain during or after sex

  • Pain with bowel movements or urination, especially during periods

  • Heavy or irregular bleeding, sometimes with clots

  • Bloating, diarrhea, constipation and digestive changes

  • Fatigue

  • Infertility or difficulty conceiving

Why Is Endometriosis So Hard to Diagnose?

On average, it takes 7–10 years to get a diagnosis of endometriosis. This delay happens because:

  • Symptoms overlap with other conditions like IBS, bladder disorders, pelvic floor issues and often gets misdiagnosed

  • Ultrasound, MRIs and other imaging can miss lesions

  • Laparoscopic surgery is the gold standard for diagnosis but is not always accessible or offered as an option

  • Menstrual pain is often normalized as “just a part of periods”

This means many people live years without answers, trying different treatments that don’t address the root problem.
